Baden near Vienna - the Emperor's summer resort. Franz I, the "good Emperor", came to Baden for the first time in 1796 and promptly fell in love with the lovely little town south of Vienna. From then on he spent his summers in Baden almost every year and made the city his official "imperial summer residence" from 1804-1834. Architecture, art and garden culture are at their peak at this time. Before long, the emperor's presence brought about an influx of aristocrats and wealthy citizens who had wonderful buildings erected in Baden. The city's reputation was further enhanced by the presence of renowned artists and composers. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Strauss father and son, Franz Grillparzer are just a few in a list of important personalities who regularly stayed in the city. Beethoven composed his 9th symphony here with the "Ode to Joy". The great composers of that time established a cultural tradition in Baden that continues until today.
